Gird Your Loins! Adorning God’s Armor

Gird Your Loins! Adorning God’s Armor

John 8:32King James Version (KJV)

32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

Wouldn’t it be nice if we all had such a warning issued when it came to the Devil’s presence in our lives?  The flashing of a bright neon light may be even better! having this kind of head’s up  may make us better equipped to fight off the wiles of the Devil.

For those of  you who do not recognize this clip, it is from the 2006 film, “The Devil Wears Prada.” Miranda, the CEO of Couture magazine, inspires an certain air that perhaps is fitting of the Devil himself as she  has a presence that fear as well as action.

However, I am getting ahead of myself…

For the past three to four weeks  I have been studying Priscilla Shirer’s “The Armor of God.”

What Is The Full Armor Of God?

There are six known pieces of armor mentioned in scripture.

  • Belt of Truth
  • Breastplate of Righteousness
  • Shoes of Peace
  • Shield of Faith
  • Helmet of Salvation
  • Sword of  The Spirit

Ephesians 6:10-18King James Version (KJV)

10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;   16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: 18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.

If we examine the passage regarding the Armor of God more closely. We notice a seventh element. This component too is crucial in our spiritual battle against the Devil and is perhaps the most easily overlooked. That element being: PRAYER! Prayer is the glue that holds our armor together!

Our preparation for spiritual warfare does not stop at the adorning of God’s armor. No!  We must also take action and pray! After all, as Priscilla Shirer eloquently pens it:

“Victory in Spiritual Warfare is inseparable from prayer.”

Without the act of prayer before, as, and after battle…we cannot possibly hope to win against the most cunning enemy of all…Satan, himself!

The Belt of Truth, What Is It’s Significance?

  • The Devil personalizes his attacks and hits us where he knows we are the most vulnerable.   The principle in all Satan’s attacks towards us is DECEPTION.  The Devil is the Master Illusionist and  it is his intent to deceive.  It is for this reason that we, as Christians, need to put on our armor.
    • John 8 : 44  KJV (King James Version)  Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
    • Illusion: Something that is deceiving by producing a false or misleading impression of reality.

In other words, we are being given a misrepresentation of the truth so as to sway the very manner in which we perceive, feel, or believe something.

  • The Belt of Truth is the first piece of armor that must be put on. The belt also called the cingulum or balteus  is adorned first on account of the purpose in which it is made to serve. The Belt of  Truth is a necessary piece of equipment. Our armor, it just simply would not be complete without it as  upon it is some of the very foundation for other pieces of armor. For if we are not to gird our loins with a belt, where else are we to keep our Sword of the Spirit?
  • A cingulum or balteus is the support of a soldier’s core. What is the core? Our core is the body area around our pelvis as well as abdominal muscle groups. It is, in fact, our very center which enables all our limbs to work together in harmony. The belt, on armor operates the same way. Supporting our core the belt helps with balance, stability, resistance to injury, as well as stamina over time and under pressure.
  • The Belt of Truth serves as a means to gird us with the protection of the truth of God’s Word. With truth as our support, we have the essential backing we need when we find ourselves immersed in a spiritual war.

What Does This Mean?

The Belt of Truth is the Truth of God. It is the standard in which we should measure our morals, thoughts, feelings, as well as actions. It is the guidelines by which we should determine our decisions. It is in the truth of God’s Word we should depend on when faced with unexpected circumstances and disappointments so that we do not fall prey to the Devil’s devices.

“Discernment  is not a matter of simply telling the difference between what is right and wrong; rather it is the difference between right and almost right.”

~Charles Spurgeon~
