The Sword Of The Spirit
What an amazing journey this has been! This final session in this study is one that bears particular significance to me as the last piece of God’s Armor is The Sword of The Spirit.
Ephesians 6:17New International Version (NIV)
17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
What Is The Sword Of The Spirit?
The Sword Of The Spirit is the final piece of the Armor of God. It is also the only piece of armor God equips us with that is not defensive.
The apostle Paul illustrates the Sword of the Spirit as Offensive equipment.
Hebrews 4:12 New International Version (NIV)
12 For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
The power of God’s Word acts as:
- A means to stand firm in faith and take on both a defensive and proactive stance
- A means to deflect Satan’s attacks
- A means to ward off Satan’s presence
A Closer Look
Examining some of the very origins of scripture, the Word of God, can be described as:
Graphe – words on a page, the ink, the paper, the binding, the very book itself
Logos – The Message
Rhema – Spoken or written words
At the very heart of it all….God’s Word, the Sword of the Spirit is the very utterances…the very words of God, Himself!
Jesus illustrates our need for this piece of armor in our daily lives in the Matthew 4.
Matthew 4New International Version (NIV)
Jesus Is Tested in the Wilderness
Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted[a]by the devil. 2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.3 The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’[b]”5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. 6 “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written:“‘He will command his angels concerning you,and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’[c]” 7 Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’[d]”8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. 9 “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.”10 Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’[e]”11 Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.
God’s word equips us for the spiritual battles we face each and every day. The Bible arms us for the most difficult decisions as well as trials we are to face in life. The Sword of the Spirit also gives us the motivation, courage, and strength when otherwise….if we did not seek God, we would not find it.
