Truth or Dare Living With Consequences: Part 2
Delving deeper into deception Elisabeth Elliot poses an interesting question.
Why Did the Serpent Approach Eve?
The possibilities are endless. Was it because she was more tempt-able or seducible? Was it on account of her position beneath the headship of her husband? Or was it something else? Only God knows.
For whatever reason Satan chose to approach Eve instead of Adam, and it was she who was deceived.
2 Corinthians 11:3 New International Version (NIV)
3 But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ.
1 Timothy 2:14 King James Version (KJV)
14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.
This, ladies and gents, is where things really get interesting.
Talk About A Power Trip
Looking into the original sin I have made a couple discoveries.
- A man is not only the physical head of the household. He is also the spiritual. He, like Adam, is held accountable for his household.
- A woman is the neck (or anchor so to speak). She can ground her family in faith or sink her family in sin. She, like Eve, if deceived can influence the men in her life to go astray.
How Are We Deceived Woe The Many Ways!
Satan is a master deceiver. He fools us in many ways.
How Does He Deceive Us?
- Through Others – Ephesians 5:6 King James Version (KJV)6 Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.
- Through Our Spiritual Leaders – Ezekiel 13:22King James Version (KJV)22 Because with lies ye have made the heart of the righteous sad, whom I have not made sad; and strengthened the hands of the wicked, that he should not return from his wicked way, by promising him life
What Are The Results?
The Nature Of Deception
Take another look at the promise Satan made to Eve.
Genesis 3:5 King James Version (KJV)
5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
To be like God…that does sound pretty awesome doesn’t it?
The promise not only is sweet to the ear but pleasing to the eye.
Genesis 3:6 King James Version (KJV)
6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
The Devil’s deals are alluring because they look good. That is why deception is so dangerous. It’s very nature is to blind us to the fact that we are being lied to.
Eve, when faced with temptation, made one fatal error. She did not evaluate the situation. She did not consider the severity of the consequences.
The reality is though…we have the exact same problem.
