I Can’t Help It

I Can’t Help It

It is quite possible that we can’t help how we feel. We may not be able to avoid feeling apprehensive about exams, physicals, or bills. We may not be able to avoid feeling annoyed when the person in line in front of us pulls out a humungous stack of coupons, but we can decide not to let our feelings run our lives.

I admit I’ve struggled with this lately as the school my children attend hasn’t been as forthcoming as I would like. Nothing brings out the anger in a protective momma bear quite like consistent problems.

My oldest son is very precious to me and has some real struggles that few can truly understand. So when the school he attends doesn’t communicate actively with me and I have to pull teeth to get some of the most basic answers a parent should have in terms of her child’s progress… its nothing short of irritating.

I’ve acted and spoken out in some ways where perhaps I could have been more Christlike. So while my actions to advocate for him might not have been wrong, I could perhaps have practiced a little more tact and patience.

Nancy Leigh Demoss illustrates this battle perfectly:

… Regardless of what emotions are whirling around inside, by God’s grace, we can choose to fix our minds on Him and to “trust and obey.” When we do we will experience His peace and the grace to be faithful, even though our circumstances may not change.

God’s Word Promises

  • I’m With You Always… Matthew 28:20 –

    New International Version (NIV)

19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

  • God Will Meet All Our Needs… Philippians 4:19

    New International Version (NIV)

19 And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.

  • God’s love for us won’t be shaken… Isaiah 54:10

    New International Version (NIV)

10 Though the mountains be shaken
        and the hills be removed,
yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken
nor my covenant of peace be removed,”
says the Lord, who has compassion on you.

  • God gives us peace, so we don’t need to be afraid… John 14:27

    New International Version (NIV)

27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

    God’s Word Says

  • Give Thanks In All Circumstances… Philippians 4:6

    New International Version (NIV)

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

  • Love Your Enemies… Matthew 5:44

Matthew 5:44 New International Version (NIV)

44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you

  • If You Hold Anything Against Anyone, Forgive Them… Mark 11:25

Mark 11:25 New International Version (NIV)

25 And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.”

What We Can Take Away From This

We feel things. As much as we may not want to admit it, we do. We cry, doubt, fear, lash out and misunderstand. If we take these same bitter emotions and focus instead of Christ, letting Him hold us… and putting our faith in Him we may not necessarily find immediate relief. However, we will find a strength and patience that would otherwise be beyond us.

Isaiah 26:3 New International Version (NIV)

You will keep in perfect peace
    those whose minds are steadfast,
    because they trust in you.
